Motorhome insurance news: Driving test age 'should be increased'

25 February 2010
Motorhome insurance customers may be interested to learn that road safety charity Brake is calling for the UK driving test age to be raised to 18.

The organisation's chief executive Mary Williams OBE said young people's cognitive abilities only finish developing in their mid-20s.

"Brake has been calling for the driving test age to be raised to 18 or even higher. The higher you go, the fewer deaths you will have, as long as enforcement is toughened up to prevent unlicensed, uninsured drivers too," she commented.

Teenager Gary Pitchford was killed last week when his learner driver girlfriend Anna Marie Hibben lost control of the vehicle they were travelling in.

Ms Williams claimed that this case highlights the need for a change in legislation.

In related news, Brake recently called for the government to take more serious action against drivers who get behind the wheel while under the influence of drugs.
