Motorhome insurance news: Conviction rates for drug-driving 'are shockingly low'

26 February 2010
Motorhome insurance customers may be interested to learn that, according to road safety organisation Brake, conviction rates for drug-driving are "shockingly low" in the UK.

Data published by the group shows there were 1,593 convictions for drug-driving charges in England and Wales in 2008, compared to 70,918 for motoring under the influence of alcohol.

The charity is calling on the government to provide police officers with approved drug testing kits and make it easier for them to apprehend drivers that are under the influence of illegal substances.

"Currently police have to prove the driver was 'unfit to drive' through the use of illegal drugs, which is more complicated to prove in the courts than the readings of a drugs test, which is a simple statistical fact," the organisation noted.

In other safety news, research by GEM Motoring Assist recently revealed that one in two drivers have had an accident or a near miss after swerving to avoid potholes.
