Motorhome insurance news: Lake District land to receive protection

9 March 2010
Police officers have been drafted in to help protect a relatively remote area of the Lake District that has been damaged by unauthorised vehicles.

Motorhome insurance customers may be aware of Caldbeck Common in the Northern Fells, which is one of many areas in Cumbria to be designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest.

According to the Lakeland Echo, the common has recently sustained considerable damage from motorcyclists and 4x4 drivers trespassing on the land.

To ensure that such deterioration does not continue, local police officers will be working with representatives of the Lake District Natural Park to catch the culprits.

"Those found to be driving illegally on the land will be dealt with seriously - it is a beautiful area that we should all respect and work to protect," Inspector Dennis Kelly told the newspaper.

The South Lakes Tourism Group recently reminded British holidaymakers of the many events taking place in the national park this year, including new exhibitions at the Wordsworth Museum in Grasmere and the Beatrix Potter Gallery in Hawkshead.
