Level crossing awareness should become a compulsory aspect of learning to drive, Network Rail has claimed.
Motorhome insurance customers may be aware that the railway operator has launched a new campaign to highlight the dangers of taking risks at train crossings.
Ian Coucher, chief executive of Network Rail, said that adding questions on level crossings to the national driving test could prevent serious accidents in the future.
"Tragically some motorists lose their lives gambling at level crossings by running red lights or dodging around barriers," he commented.
"Lives will be saved if motorists learn how to safely use level crossings from the day they pass their test."
According to figures from Network Rail, 14 crashes and 13 deaths were recorded at level crossings last year.
The attempt to improve safety in this area by making changes to driver testing has been supported by the British Transport Police.
Road safety charity Brake recently called for the UK driving test age to be raised to 18.
