Touring caravan security

Not so long ago UK caravan thefts reached a high of around 5,000 units each year, with a vast majority of these caravans never being seen again. Fortunately, things have improved slightly in recent years, but the risk of theft is still not something that touring caravan insurance customers can  take lightly.

For some time it had been assumed that certain types of touring caravan were more prone to theft and that by default others were relatively safe. However, the simple fact is that any caravan be it 2, 4 or 6 berth, single or twin axle caravan, British or foreign, of any age, it is at risk.

  • Caravan theft can be a distressing experience

A stolen caravan is not only a significant financial loss but it can also be a hugely traumatic experience for the whole family, and yet a surprising number of people give little consideration to the security precautions they take, or they may consider security to be an unnecessary convenience or expense.

Very often cost is a prime factor when considering what security devices to use, and of course where best to store the caravan, and yet these decisions can make the difference between keeping the caravan and becoming another caravan theft statistic. We would always recommend therefore that security devices (like touring caravan insurance) be part of your caravan budget, rather than an after thought once you have brought your pride and joy home.

  • Caravan security device considerations

Whilst cost and sheer weight are not necessarily good indicators of a good theft deterrent, it is no surprise that often the more robust and secure devices are bulky and more awkward to use, particularly on a typical rainy night on a patch of wet concrete or a muddy field.

Portability and ease of use and storage may become a limiting or deciding factor. Whilst any caravan security device has a certain visual deterrent effect, there is little point in relying on a device that can be easily overcome with a bit of brute force and a scaffold pole and so it pays to research your available choices before making a decision.

We would strongly recommend seeking impartial advice from professional and independent sources such as Sold Secure, as fitting devices with professional accreditation may even reduce your touring caravan insurance premium, in addition to giving you peace of mind. We would suggest that as a minimum a good modern hitch lock and wheel clamp, or better still an Alko Secure Wheel lock, are used at all practical times in conjunction with a caravan alarm.

Internet forums and caravan owners clubs can be an invaluable source of knowledge and experience for all aspects of caravanning and security is no exception. As with all such things, you should keep an open mind as forum topics can be very emotive and conclusions are sometimes drawn as a result of a single experience (positive or otherwise).

Investing in a caravan is a lifestyle choice, allowing you to make the most of your valuable leisure time amongst family and friends and so it is a shame that protecting your property from thieves even has to be a consideration. The sad truth is that any item of value is at risk of theft and after your house and possibly your car, your touring caravan is likely to be your most valuable asset – all in one easily moveable package, and it must be worth a little time and effort to protect.
