The renowned caravan historian and successful author, Andrew Jenkinson has published a new book “the story of Sprite Caravans”. The first UK paperback dedicated to one caravan brand – Sprite (one of the best known makes in caravanning history).
The paperback provides a comprehensive insight into the four distinct periods, in the history of Sprite. With the use of rare archive photos, Andrew clearly demonstrates just how the innovative Sprite founder (Sam Alper OBE) influenced caravan design, manufacturer and marketing to bring caravanning to a wider audience.
- 1948 to 1959: the introduction of the Streamline Rover, Ranger and Elf caravan models, which were soon replaced by the first Sprite caravan to hit the market – the Streamline “Sprite” and shortly thereafter, the Sprite Major.
- 1960 to 1969: and the huge public demand for caravans, in which Sprite dominated the touring caravan market
- 1970 to 1979: Sprite’s turbulent years, with the economic squeeze affecting caravan sales of higher priced models
- 1980 to the present day: an end of an era with the liquidation of Sprite’s holding company, Caravans International and a new beginning under the ownership of the Swift Group.
About the author
Andrew is a well known journalist and the established authority to the UK caravan industry. He has written several books including “Caravans: the illustrated history from 1960”; “the Veloce Guide to the Top 100 Touring Caravans”: “Motorhomes – the illustrated history” and “I-Spy Caravans and Motorhomes (for Michelin)”.
