The law on car insurance

In the current economic climate, 3 in 4 drivers look for ways to reduce car insurance costs due to increased financial pressures. However If you own a vehicle and it is registered in your name, unless it has been declared as “off the road” with a ‘Statutory off Road Notification’ (SORN) with the DVLA, it must be insured at all times.

As of 20 June 2011, if you own a vehicle and are not insured (or haven’t made a SORN for your vehicle), your record will not appear on the Motor Insurance Database (MID) and you can expect to receive a warning letter, followed by a £100 Fixed Penalty fine, wheel clamping and even court prosecution – carrying a maximum £1,000 fine.

The database is constantly being used as part of the Continuous Insurance Enforcement (CIE) scheme to identify potentially uninsured vehicles and enables the police to detect uninsured drivers and to seize about 500 uninsured vehicles a day.

  • Check your vehicle on the Motor Insurance Database (MID)

It’s now possible, and very easy, to check that your vehicle is registered on the MID.

You can do this by logging on to: www.askMID.com then just follow the instructions, which allow you to confirm quickly and easily that your vehicle insurance details have been entered.

All you have to do is enter your vehicle’s registration number and to confirm that the vehicle is registered, owned or insured by either you or your employer and regularly driven by you.

Then press enter and the system will instantly tell you whether or not a policy for your vehicle is recorded on the system.

Remember to stay legal, stay insured.
